Exclusions

Netcare will treat patients who are assessed as suitable for day case cataract surgery under local anaesthesia. There is no provision for general anaesthesia on the units, except in absolute emergency.

Patients identified with one of the below conditions should not be referred to the mobile unit. If these conditions are only noted at the cataract clinic appointment, the patient will be referred to the local NHS eye department or GP as appropriate.

  • Severe dementia
  • Severe learning difficulties
  • Children
  • Patients who are unable to communicate during surgery for any reason should not be booked for surgery in the ambulatory unit under local anesthesia and should be carefully assessed for their suitability
  • Patients who cannot lie flat for the procedure
  • Patients with a known latex allergy
  • Patients with known severe claustrophobia
  • Patients will neuromuscular disorders for example Parkinson’s disease giving rise to involuntary, uncontrollable movements
The following patients are considered temporary exclusions from surgery until their underlying condition has been suitably treated by their GP or NHS ophthalmologist to allow surgery to go ahead:
  • Chronic nasolacrimal duct obstruction with infection
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure
  • Too high level of warfarin
  • Patients with clinically unstable ocular co-morbidities such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, AMD or ARM.
